Pygmy Goat Breed Overview

Pygmy goats are a small, hardy, and friendly miniature goat breed known for their compact size, playful nature, and suitability as both pets and breeding animals. Originally derived from West African dwarf goats, they have become popular in Australia for hobby farms, small-acreage properties, and registered studs.

  • Size: Very small, stocky build with short legs and a broad body. Average size of a Doe (female) is 40-50cm, with bucks/weathers (males) being 45-55cm at the withers.

  • Temperament:  Typically gentle, curious, and people‑oriented, making them excellent firendly companion animals.

  • Lifespan: Pygmys live between 10–15 years with proper care

  • Colours: Come in a wide range of colours and patterns.

  • Hardiness: Adaptable and resilient; thrive in Australian climates with appropriate shelter. Must have wind/rain protection and some kind of shelter

Pygmy Goat Nutrition

Pygmy goats are browsers, not grazers like sheep and cattle.  Browsing is the natural feeding behaviour of goats where they selectively eat leaves, shrubs, bark, twigs, weeds, and low tree branches rather than grazing mainly on grass.

They thrive on a simple, fiber‑rich diet with only minimal extras

 Common browse plants goats enjoy:

  • Bottlebrush
  • Willow
  • Mulberry
  • Peppermint
  • Sheoak
  • Many shrubs and safe native species
  • Crunchy vegetables
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Hay with a bit of lucerne mixed in
  • Foraging and nibbling on shrubs
  • Enrichment feeders with small treats hidden inside

Remember there are handy apps for identifying plants and shrubs and if they are suitable for your goats to browse on.

🐐 Feed Tips

  • They are easy to overfeed — obesity is common in miniature breeds.
  • Feed little and often, not large concentrated meals.
  • Provide browse (branches, leaves) for enrichment and natural behaviour.
  • Use slow‑feed hay nets to reduce waste and mimic natural grazing.
  • Always introduce new foods gradually to avoid rumen upset.

Pygmy goats love treats, but they should be occasional, not daily meals.

  • Carrots
  • Apples (no seeds)
  • Pears
  • Pumpkin
  • Sweet potato
  • Banana
  • Spinach or kale (small amounts)
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Lucerne (alfalfa) — treat only, too rich for daily feeding

🚫 Foods to Avoid

These can cause bloat, toxicity, or serious digestive issues.

  • Grains (corn, wheat, pellets) — only tiny amounts if ever
  • Dog/cat food
  • Avocado
  • Potato peels
  • Onions / garlic
  • Rhubarb
  • Azaleas, oleander, lantana, nightshade
  • Bread, biscuits, human snacks
